turbo truck begins

This is going to be brief for now because it's late. I finally got most everything I need for my basic build. To sum it all up I got a 72mm turbo I'm building the exhaust system from scratch and have minimal experience welding so go easy on me if my welds blow(hopefully not literally). I have to have my manifolds flipped up and forward to clear accessories and water lines. Here's some pics so far..... only 2 exhaust bolts were broken off, which royally sucks, but the truck has 192k so it was to be expected.

  • I strongly approve of this project! Keep posting pics as you go. I'm sure if I had kept my 1500hd I would have been doing the same thing. So the turbo is going to.Go Live where the air box is kind of then?
  • Holy shit this is awesome!
  • I went with a cx racing turbo because they are one of the few China built that are balanced. Yep put the turbo right where the air box was.

  • Made some decent progress today and got better at welding. Routing the intercooler piping is sucking major wang.

  • Very quick Progress, I'm a little jelly haha
  • Tired, still lots to do, ran into some minor issues. The coupler that goes from the throttle body to intercooler pipe doesn't want to give adequate clearance for the alternator. I'm going to need a spacer or something. The generic piping kit is less than great. If I was to do it again I'd try to get a different kit but I'm on a budget so I got the best cheap shit I could. I'm curious how everything will hold up. I got the intercooler permanently mounted now. Of everything I have left I dread attempting to get the broken manifold bolts out. Especially since one of them is the passenger rear.

Who's great idea was it to get red couplers anyways? They bug me. Stupid cheap kit.

  • Holy progress batman! Could always buy black couplers later on. Or wrap em in electrical tape haha
  • Looks like a great build! Pretty awesome you decided to turbo this thing. Really makes me want to get an LS more and more each day. Nice work!
  • You need to paint that fmic black for sure.
  • Holy shit...Landon, you are kickin' this project's ass yo! The progress is very quick! If you need an extra hand, I'll probably be available to lend some help...but my experience is limited, so bare with me. LoL
I wish I could kick my turbo slant project in high gear but I need to rebuild the one engine for boost and that costs $$$, so mine is on the backburner. Glad to see a cool turbo project on here though, I will be keeping an eye on this one!
  • Thanks everyone! I'm taking a break today, I have my boy and it's crummy out so he can't play outside while I tinker. I think Phil said it best, it was something to this affect, when you have a big shiny fmic on a vehicle it's like walking around with your dick out. lol I've had black intercoolers in the past and hate when they start getting chipped up besides paint costs money. lol. Maybe at some point I will but not now. I still need to drop the tank and get my pump installed, run new power to it, install my injectors, wire and install the map sensor and iat sensor, reroute some coolant lines, install coolant and oil feed/return for the turbo, finish the exhaust, install the wastegate, wrap my exhaust, install vacuum lines.... oh yeah and get the broken part of the dipstick out of the block. Grrawr.

Hey Brodie I appreciate the offer but it's going to be sporadic at best when I'll be able to work on it now.

I've been trying to figure it out via process of elimination but who are you grayguy?!
  • Lol. Subaru Legacy in the sig and you can't guess it's Max?

At the very least your quick Progress is inspiring, maybe I'll actually build motor mounts and tranny mounts for my car this week, I have the plates bolted to the block, I just need to put the motor back in and take 37 measurements before burning anything together.
  • No problem bud, you can get a hold of me on FB if you do need someone to lend a hand. Keep up the awesome progress!
Max, if you can get me some pics of your updated vehicles, I can make you a new sig so people aren't baffled as to who you are in the future. lol
  • Like I told Max earlier the car in his sig is all the same color, it threw me off.
  • That is exactly what that car still looks like Brodie haha
